Gadgets use a small dc motor to vibrate. The motor will have a small weight attached to it slightly offset from the centre. When it is powered , it will begin to wobble and the vibrations are felt.
The amount of vibration depends on the weight, the distance of the weight away from the centre and the speed of rotation.
Usually 2V to 3.6V motors are used for this purpose,
